What is schizophrenia?

Causes

Symptoms
Symptoms of schizophrenia are further divided into four categories:
Positive symptoms of this mental disorder include:
- Hallucination- hearing voices, or smelling, and seeing things which are not present
- Delusion- patient stays comfortable with the false belief
- Disorganized thoughts- no coordination of thoughts; jumping from one thing to another without any reason
- Movement disorder
Negative symptoms of schizophrenia involve:
- No interest in day-to-day life – lack of motivation
- Reduced rate of speaking
- Flat effect – no facial reaction or reduced vocal tone
Cognitive schizophrenia symptoms can be subtle in some patients and maybe severe in some cases
- Trouble paying attention
- Poor decision making
- Slow learning
Emotional symptoms are usually negative symptoms, like:
- Blunt emotions
- Anxiousness
- Bad temper
- Sudden outburst of anger
Types
This mental condition comes in different types. We will discuss few details of two major kind of mental disorder:
Catatonic schizophrenia
In one period, patient does not respond to instruction or move very slowly. On the other end, motor activity may become extreme or peculiar, like mimicking sounds (echolalias) or mimicking movements(echopraxia). It is known as ‘catatonic excitement’.
Symptoms of this mental disorder flip between hyperactivity and inactivity. Apart from ‘Echolalias’ and ‘Echopraxia’, other signs include:
- Stupor – no interaction with the environment
- Mannerism – carrying out odd, exaggerated actions
- Catalepsy – adopting unusual postures
- Mutism – limited verbal responses
- Posturing – actively holding a posture against gravity
- Negativism – lack of response to instructions or external stimuli
- Agitation – without any known reason
- Stereotypy – repetitive movements without an apparent reason
Paranoid schizophrenia
In this type of schizophrenia, patient loses touch with the reality. In this kind of psychosis, behavior of the people changes in a different way in different time. Onset of this illness may be at late adolescence or early adulthood. Patient with this psychotic disorder lives in a life of delusion.
With this kind of delusion, patient might land up with the conclusion, that:
- Spouse is cheating on him
- Neighbor is plotting against him
- Government is spying on him
- Colleagues or friends are making plan to loot him
Treatment
While this psychotic disorder gets diagnosed after seeing the symptoms or performing any schizophrenia test, psychiatrist might advise medication or therapy, depending on the severity. Many cognitive and behavioral therapies are included to treat this disorder. If you see your friend or family member behaving in a way patient behaves in this condition, do not delay!
